I’ve always believed in testing things before recommending them.
I taste a new cake from the pastry shop before ordering it for a family celebration. I try a new candle scent before gifting it to a friend. And I do the same with my work: I test every piece of advice before teaching it to my clients.
I experiment with body language tips and conversation techniques. I make a conscious effort to remember names, to smile, to maintain eye contact, to keep my phone off the dining table. Everything I write or speak about, I live it first.
But recently, one simple idea struck me. Perhaps the best etiquette advice I can offer isn’t about posture, words, or rituals. It’s this:
It can be as small as holding the shop door open for the person behind you.
But here’s the secret: don’t do it automatically. Do it with awareness.
Notice your kindness. Notice its effect. See the surprise in someone’s eyes. The quick smile. The quiet “thank you.”
It’s not about acting unnaturally. And it’s certainly not about waiting for appreciation. It’s about noticing what awakens in you when you choose kindness on purpose.
Because kindness and politeness, when practiced with full awareness, are deeply rewarding.
They cost you nothing, but they leave a trace. In others. And in you.
For the past few months, I’ve been living this little “ritual of politeness.” It’s simple. It’s fun. And it’s quietly transformed my days.
So here’s my challenge to you:
✨ Hold the door.
✨ Offer the seat.
✨ Say the kind word.
But do it with intention.
And watch how good manners create a ripple of humanity around you.
Will you join me in this experiment?
